The community is invited to participate in the programs, services, and activities presented by the Education Department. Programs are designed to engage a variety of audiences with our collections and exhibitions through inquiry and an appreciation of the creative process. Target Family Artmaking Workshops

Claire Falkenstein Sculpture

Come get your hands dirty and your brains engaged!

In these FREE drop-in workshops, adults and children will work together to create artworks inspired by art on display in the Museum. Workshops are typically offered on the third Sunday of each month. Due to the holidays, this month's session will be offered one week earlier.

Assemblage Sculptures: Inspired by modernist sculptures in the Modernism and the Milton Wichner Collection exhibition, participants will create their own 3-D sculptures made of assorted materials.

Toyota Children's Gallery

William Livingston's Pinhole Photography
Clickin' It Old School: Outcomes from Pinhole Photography Workshops at the Long Beach Museum of Art

September 19, 2008 - January 11, 2009

Inspired by The Art of Commerce: William Livingston's Pinhole Photographs of the Port of Long Beach. Museum educators invited children in our community to experience the process and techniques that Livingston experienced. In a series of three free workshops, participants explored the art and science of pinhole photography. This children's exhibition features a sampling of landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and architectural studies created by using the most basic form of photography.

KidsVisions Tours

National Endowment for the Arts

The KidsVisions Program is available to all fifth grade students in the Long Beach Unified School District. The program content follows the guidelines of the National, State, and Long Beach School District Standards for Visual and Performing Arts. These tours begin at 10:00 am and bus transportation is provided. One adult chaperone is required for every 10 students and adults must remain with their group at all times. Toyota Tours for Children

Toyota Tours are free of charge to all school groups (public or private). Tours are available on Friday's beginning at 9:30 a.m. One adult chaperone is required for every 10 students and adults must remain with their group at all times. There is a 40-student maximum for grades K-3 and 60 for all other grade levels. Fill out our online tour request form.

Self-Guided Visits

Teachers who wish to conduct their own tours can schedule self-guided visits. Write "self-guided" in the program title on the request form. One adult chaperone per 10 students is required and adults must remain with their group at all times. Self-guided groups may not enter the Museum before 11 a.m. Fill out our online tour request form

Programs

Throughout the year, we offer a variety of programs for adults that enhance our collections and exhibitions. Programs include lectures, symposia, and artists' classes. Check back for more details.

The Docent Council

Want to share your love of art? Check out our vibrant Docent program for more information.

The Docent Council is a volunteer group whose mission is to provide educational services to the public for the Long Beach Museum of Art. Join a wide circle of men and women who share similar interests and have the satisfaction of bringing the cultural heritage of the visual arts to the community. Be a part of connecting Museum visitors and school groups to the visual arts!

Volunteering at the Museum

Docent helping children with art project

The hundreds of dedicated volunteers who help the Museum are crucial to our well-being! There are many ways to get involved and to contribute your time. Our Education Department is always on the look out for more docents in order to fulfill public demand for tours. By volunteering with the Membership Department, you can share the joys of being a member with the general public. In addition, the Museum holds special events throughout the year that help raise money for our education and exhibitions programming.

Now Accepting Applications

The Long Beach Museum of Art, the city's most established visual arts venue is currently accepting applicants to its volunteer docent program. Docents provide tours of the Museum's exhibitions and assist with hands-on artmaking activities for local school children. No experience is necessary, just a desire to learn and an interest in sharing your love of art with children.

An informational open house will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. The 12-week training session will be conducted from 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. the first and third Thursdays of the month starting January 15, 2009.

Join a wide circle of men and women who share similar interests and have the satisfaction of bringing the cultural heritage of the visual arts to the community. Be a part of connecting Museum visitors and school groups to the visual arts!
